The ICE House Project
What is
the ICE
House?Cornwall
College and the University of Plymouth are
working in
collaboration with Cornwall Learning (part of Cornwall Council) and the
Peninsula Centre for Excellence in Teacher Training on an ESF
Convergence funded project called ‘ICE House’. The project aims to
research and embed teaching and learning methods that develop and
support learners’ skills in innovation, creativity and enterprise
(ICE). The project is specifically focused on the redesign of
the
college’s Teacher Training and Professional Development
programmes. The project group started work in August 2009 and
is
due to finish in June 2011, when our first cohort of trainee teachers
will have completed training that embeds ICE ideas and
methodology. We are exploring ways of
extending the
project to work with serving teachers in colleges, schools and higher education, and with
businesses that are committed to being learning organisations.
Through a process of primary and secondary research; dialogue with
teachers, employers, researchers and policy-makers; through piloting
and evaluation the project group are working together to explore,
define and introduce practical strategies that will lead to the wide
and successful adoption of teaching for ICE. A key focus of the project
is to engage and challenge trainee teachers as they develop their
practice. Problem-based learning; creative problem solving;
innovation education; enterprising behaviour; mindset and the links to
employability are all key areas we are currently investigating.
Working collaboratively and engaging with uncertainty are at the heart
of both the project and of teaching for ICE. The relationship
between collaboration, risk taking and summative assessment is likely
to be an important area of investigation.
